Mounting an RFID tag on metal can present a problem for the user because the metal detunes the tag causing it to shift frequency and the tag is no longer readable. Our solution to mount to a metal surface is to use various standoff constructions to reduce the amount of interference. One possible construction is similar to the single-sided acrylic tag except a foam adhesive provides an isolator or standoff so the RF is successfully transmitted to the reader or interrogator. We use 3/1" thick closed cell foam with both sides coated with an acrylic adhesive. This foam construction is to use low density polyethylene as the standoff. We can convert thicknesses up to 1/4".
